Star Wars+ Seven Samurai=Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon
Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon, like Rian Johnson's Glass Onion, takes the spot of being Netflix's biggest movie of the year. The hype is real, so let's get to it.
Before I get down to discussing Rebel Moon, let's talk a bit about Netflix. I think at this point in time, Netflix is simply the best Hollywood studio. They put big money into various director-driven projects and give a lot of love to projects that simply wouldn't get made at other traditional studios. Netflix has allowed directors to take risks that may not have been taken before, and it makes for more interesting projects instead of simply seeing the same recycled Disney formula trash we see over and over again. Are all of them good? Obviously not, but I'd rather have this over the 100th Marvel film, in which Godzilla teams up with Iron Man to fight the looney tunes.
"Unless you're making a tentpole movie with a Happy Meal component, no one's interested," Fincher said of his decision to sign with Netflix rather than traditional studios.
There's a reason why legendary auteurs like Martin Scorcese and David Fincher have shifted to Netflix.
Coming back to Rebel Moon, it is easily my most awaited movie of the year. Zack Snyder returns with his usual aplomb to create a visually breathtaking action-sci-fi universe. And best of all, this is only Part 1 of the series, with Part 2 already shot. He reteams with his frequent collaborators, Shay Hatten ( Army of the Dead) and Kurt Johnstad (300/Man of Steel), who have co-written the script, and Junkie XL (Zack Snyder's Justice League) returns to score. The man is an absolute genius; he mixes interesting themes about the human psyche with gorgeous visuals and visceral action- which is why I feel a movie like Rebel Moon has the potential to be his best work since Batman Vs Superman.
A Seven Samurai-inspired Star Wars-type movie is exactly what I want, so I cannot wait for December 2022.
And lastly, while this current era of filmmakers is good, nobody really does it like Zack Snyder/ Chris Nolan.
Adios!
